It’s a side effect of growing up in a nation where the most widespread and accepted religion is Christianity. The Atheists in countries where the religion is different, most likely use a different words.

As for myself, I don’t use your god’s name in vain, I use the Flying Spaghetti monster’s. RAmen.

Some of we atheists are better termed “panatheist.” This term means that we are at once awed by the world and universe around us. In fact, we will use what sound like very religious terms like “creation” or even “God” to convey our wonder so that other people will understand the magnitude of our appreciation. However, we do in fact not believe in God or creation, but there is a certain poetry in these terms. A likewise situation occurs when we take the “Lord’s name in Vein.” It is only in order to express anguish in a manner that other people around us, who are probably religiously inclined, will be able to relate to the degree in which we are upset. Does that help answer your question?

now then, as incomprehensible as the chances of you learning anything are imagine that you have moved to france for the last five years and speak pretty fluent french. now imagine you have stubbed you toe. which language do you swear in? english.

having been raised in a christian community and then become an atheist. i naturally grew up hearing people say ‘for gods sake’ etc. i learned that that is what you say when you are pissed off.

if i had been raised a buddhist i would have used buddhas name in vain.
